JHR is being developed as a specialist collection service rather than a walk-in scrapyard.
This service is designed around the material coming to us through collection, rather than customers having to repeatedly travel to a traditional yard. We collect from trade premises, workshops, stores, vans, working sites and, where suitable, private addresses.
Our core area is York and the surrounding region, but larger or worthwhile enquiries outside the normal service area can still be considered individually.

One of the main differences in the JHR model is that collection is built into the service.
Rather than loading material into your own vehicle, travelling to a yard, waiting, unloading, and then dealing with the yard’s own processes, suitable material can be collected from where it already is, with you.

For example, someone who has had a property rewired, renovated or refurbished may be left with a worthwhile quantity of redundant cable or other recoverable metal. Where the type and quantity make collection practical, JHR can still consider the enquiry.
You do not need to be a regular commercial customer to ask.

As waste movements become increasingly formalised and digital, the administrative side matters more. The JHR system is being built so that material information, collection details and relevant records can be captured as part of the collection process rather than treated as an afterthought. The aim is to reduce the amount of separate admin the customer has to deal with.

DIGITAL-FIRST FROM THE OUTSET
Waste tracking in the UK is moving towards a MUCH more digital system.
Rather than building JHR around paper processes and then trying to retrofit digital record-keeping later, the business systems are being designed with digital collection records, traceability and future waste-tracking requirements in mind from the beginning.
That means the operational systems behind JHR are intended to record the important details around an enquiry and collection in a structured way.

Once a collection is agreed, the material is collected from the agreed location and weighed as part of the process.
Collection details are recorded and payment is handled using an agreed permitted cashless method.
The exact process may vary depending on the material, quantity and collection circumstances, but the aim is to keep the customer side straightforward and transparent.

Copper remains useful long after the original cable, fitting or installation has reached the end of its life.
Recovering copper and other non-ferrous metals allows material already extracted and processed to return to productive use.

Demand for copper is now highly significant, meanwhile bringing new, mined supply into production can take years.
Recovered copper therefore forms a very important part of the overall supply picture.
The International Energy Agency reported that secondary copper, including directly reused scrap, supplied around one-third of total copper demand in 2023.
JHR is not intended to be a general waste collection business.

COPPER CAN KEEP COMING BACK
One of copper’s strongest properties is that it can be recycled repeatedly while retaining the characteristics that make it valuable.
That means copper recovered from redundant cable today can potentially return to use in future products rather than being permanently lost.
For JHR, that is the point of our recovery process:

Resource estimates do not mean all of that copper is economically recoverable today. The point is that copper is a finite mineral resource, while large quantities of usable copper are already above ground and circulating through buildings, infrastructure, equipment and waste streams.
Recovering brass fittings, valves, taps, offcuts and similar material preserves the value of both metals and keeps useful material in circulation.
Brass is primarily an alloy of copper and zinc.
And like copper, brass can often be recovered from redundant components rather than being lost in mixed waste.
